Isaiah Thomas is doing something this season that we’ve never seen before. With an average of 10.5 points per fourth quarter, he’s on pace to surpass Kobe Bryant (9.5), LeBron James (9.1) and Tracy McGrady (8.6) for the highest fourth-quarter scoring since the NBA began tracking the stat in 1996. He’s also set to end the season as the first player in 20 years to average double digit scoring in a quarter, which is an incredible feat considering Thomas fell to the final pick of the 2011 NBA Draft due to concerns about how his height would translate to the pros.Thomas has been incredibly efficient in fourth quarters, too. By shooting 48.7 percent from the field, 40.8 percent from the perimeter and 91.1 percent from the free throw line, his true shooting percentage in the final 12 minutes of games (67.3 percent) is better than Rudy Gobert (66.9), DeAndre Jordan (66.3) and Kevin Durant (65.1) on the season. Plus, while his defense has been a major concern, Thomas has been a net positive overall for the Celtics in crunch time.

The difference is that Thomas gambled on Stephon Marbury, trying to land his big chip for the future only two weeks on the job. Johnson went the smart route before the trade deadline by dealing off Lou Williams, his most reliable offensive player, to the Rockets for Corey Brewer and a No. 1 draft pick this June.Without Williams, the Lakers will be able to accomplish a very important mission: They can tank the final two months by just rolling out their regulars, headed by D’Angelo Russell, Brandon Ingram and Julius Randle.The young squad is likely to continue losing, ensuring one of the NBA’s three worst records. The last thing the Lakers want to do is win meaningless games, lose their top-three spot in the lottery and end up giving away not just their first-round pick to the Sixers this June, but also their No. 1 pick in 2019 (to Orlando). They’re in no position to lose two more building blocks, so the best course of action is to lose. They won’t catch Brooklyn for the worst record, but they’ll do themselves good to have Phoenix move past them in the standings.“Our untouchables are our young talent right now,” Johnson said of his trio when he took over as president last week. “We’ve already let everybody know that. We want to hang on to our young talent. People have been calling for it, but we’ve been saying no.” The NBA worked quickly in jumping to Dwight Howard's defense after the Hawks center was ejected in Monday night's 114-98 win against the Celtics.Howard was ejected late in the third quarter after receiving his second technical foul, for taunting, after hanging on the rim following a massive dunk. The NBA said later Monday night that the play should have been ruled "non-unsportsmanlike" and thus not have counted toward an automatic ejection.Howard finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds in 28 minutes of action."Despite me getting kicked out, I think guys really stepped up and played great; it was a good team win," Howard said, via ESPN.com. "I apologized to the guys and told them I need to do a better job of keeping my composure and some other things, and they understood." A new wave of young talent has taken over the NBA! The great Dennis Schroder-Isaiah Thomas war of words waged on Monday morning.More than a month after Thomas refuted Schroeder's allegations that the Celtics' point guard insulted Schroder's mother on the court, the Hawks' guard is calling baloney on Thomas' denial."Everybody heard it," Schroder said Monday. "My family sat courtside too. Thabo [Sefalosha] heard some things. He wasn't involved in it. It is what it is. We just try to compete. It gets heated in the game."Schroder's original allegations came after a Celtics 103-101 win Jan. 13."I’m playing basketball," Schroder told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution at the time. “If he think that he got to curse at my mom or say some dumb stuff about my family, that has nothing to do with basketball. That’s his choice. I’ve got too much class for that. Next one, we are going to get it."Thomas responded then by saying Schroder was not someone the two-time All-Star concerned himself with, saying that Schroder was "not on [Thomas'] level" before denying the allegations."I don't talk about nobody's mom. I don't cuss at nobody's mom," Thomas said. And I don't talk about people's families. So whatever he said, that's a 100 percent lie, and he knows that." That was a surprise to many around the league, who had McCaw pegged as a late first-rounder, but he was, in the end, nudged out of the first round by the five international players taken in the first round outside of the lottery. Could Jimmer Fredette be returning to the NBA?The former NBA guard is reportedly reaching out to teams after a stellar MVP season with the Chinese Basketball Association, and the interest could be mutual, according to The Vertical.Fredette, who plays for the Shanghai Sharks, has helped the team advance in the CBA playoffs, much in thanks to Fredette's 37.5 points per game.He also made headlines back in the U.S. scoring 73 points in a double-overtime loss to the Zhejiang Guangsha Lions on Feb. 20, which is the fourth-highest in CBA history.However, just because Fredette can play in the CBA doesn't mean he will excel in the NBA. He averaged 6.0 points and 1.4 assists per game in the five years he was with the league.Only time will tell if Fredette will make his way back to the U.S., but now he needs to focus on taking his team past the quarterfinals of the Chinese playoffs. |
